Breaking down macro concepts and converting them to small doable tasks is in my opinion the key aspect of Getting Things Done
I've found myself using my weekly review and my daily reviews as new means to procrastination. Once identified that was easy to remedy. But how does one stay focused for a prolonged period of time without getting distracted?
There are several options:
- block extraneous internet content not needed to get the task done
- Go off-line for the duration of your task
- Set yourself a hard time limit to get the task or subtask done
For a procrastinator work is best accomplished via sprints. I've personally found the Pomodoro Technique to work for me. (hat tip: Web Worker Daily)
It breaks work into 25 minute intervals with 5 minute breaks in between to grab some coffee, goof off etc. The name is derived from using tomato kitchen timers such as this one. For those of us that insist on using a method that uses electricity we got the following two.
A pretty bare bones website that allows easy use of the method here at http://tomatoi.st/
and an Adobe Air app that I use occasionally at http://www.focusboosterapp.com/
Try the Pomodoro method out for a couple of hours. It has significantly improved my productivity at home and on work projects.
